Onshore wind energy vital, say Dutch wind sector & grid operators

to overview

For the first time, renewable energy is the most important source of electricity production in the Netherlands. In the first half year of 2024, renewable energy generated 53% of electricity according to Statistics Netherlands. This milestone underlines the growing relevance of renewable energy in the Netherlands.

As the demand for renewable energy increases, our team in the Benelux is working hard to realize onshore wind projects together with local communities. “Onshore wind power is not only essential for achieving our climate goals, but can also support with complex challenges we are facing today, such as grid congestion and national security. And when we develop projects together with the local community, everyone benefits,” says Marc Noël de Wild, Head of Wind Development for BayWa r.e. Benelux.

NedZero, a trade association for renewable energy of which BayWa r.e. Benelux is a member, together with the trade association for grid operators, recently published an open letter emphasizing the advantages of onshore wind power. The letter, signed by door Jan Vos (NedZero), Olof van der Gaag (NVDE), Siward Zomer (Energie-Nederland) and Hans-Peter Oskam (Netbeheer Nederland), was submitted on the 25th of September to the Dutch cabinet. The letter explains how onshore wind:

  • Reduces of local grid congestion and enables local businesses to get a connection
  • Strengthens national security
  • Contributes to energy independence
  • Improves local air quality
  • Reduces the use of clean water for electricity production
  • Keeps household electricity prices low and stable

The letter not only offers a vision of the benefits of onshore wind energy, but also serves as a call to the Dutch government to accelerate the development of wind farms to drive the energy transition.
